What is it?
A LAN covers a limited local area such as an office floor or campus segment. A WAN connects networks across larger geographic distances. WLAN is a wireless LAN; VPN creates a protected logical connection across another network.
Why should I learn it?
Knowing the boundary tells you which devices, links and troubleshooting domains are involved.
How it works
Endpoint → LAN access → gateway/edge → WAN or provider → remote LAN.
Real-world example
A branch office may use an Ethernet LAN locally and a provider or VPN connection to reach headquarters.
Troubleshooting mindset
First identify whether the failure is inside the LAN, at the edge, or across the WAN path.
Common mistake
Do not memorise the definition without connecting it to packet flow, device state and verification. Ask: what should happen, what actually happened, and which command or capture can prove the difference?
