PC-A broadcasts an ARP request on the LAN; the gateway replies with its MAC address.

What is it?

ARP answers a local Ethernet question: “I know the IPv4 address; which MAC address should I use in the next frame?”

Why should I learn it?

ARP failures often look like a routing or cabling problem until you check the local resolution step.

How it works

Host needs a local MAC → broadcasts ARP request → owner replies → mapping cached for future frames.

Real-world example

For a local destination, a host broadcasts an ARP request and the owner replies. For a remote destination, the host ARPs for the default gateway MAC—not the remote server MAC.

Troubleshooting mindset

If two IPs look local but sit in different VLANs, ARP cannot cross that VLAN boundary.

Common mistake

Do not memorise the definition without connecting it to packet flow, device state and verification. Ask: what should happen, what actually happened, and which command or capture can prove the difference?
