Host VLAN10 → gateway → Layer-3 route → VLAN20 gateway/interface → destination.
Real-world example
A multilayer switch can use SVIs as gateways for multiple VLANs.
Troubleshooting mindset
Check both Layer-2 VLAN/trunk state and Layer-3 gateway/routing state.
Common mistake
Do not memorise the definition without connecting it to packet flow, device state and verification. Ask: what should happen, what actually happened, and which command or capture can prove the difference?
